Study Of Comparing Endovascular Surgery To Medical Management For Stroke

Description

Seeking men and women experiencing a stroke caused by a blood clot in their brain and whose National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is 6 or more for a study comparing surgically removing the clot to the standard practice of medical management with drugs and physical therapy.

Overview

Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to receive either the standard therapy of medical management with drugs and rehabilitation or surgery to remove the blood clot plus medical management. There will be two study visits while in the hospital, a 10-minute phone call after a month and a 40-minute clinic visit after 3 months.

What we're hoping for

We are studying whether adding surgery to remove a blood clot within 8 hours of experiencing an ischemic stroke is better or worse than medical management such as rehabilitation and drugs to prevent future strokes alone.
